During the holidays, there is a special feeling of magic. From family gatherings and unique traditions to decorations and opening presents. Each family has their own special ways to celebrate. Some families may choose this time of year to bring home a new furry addition!

Bringing home a puppy for Christmas adds an extra sense of warmth and joy to your celebrations. With time off work and kids out of school for a few weeks, it can be a wonderful opportunity to bond with your new pet. Plus, it helps them acclimate to their new home.

Puppies bring boundless love and excitement to the home. However, this is a huge commitment. There are factors you must consider before welcoming home a puppy to ensure a  smooth and stress-free experience.

What to Consider Before Getting a Puppy for Christmas

Timing is Everything

The holiday season is often one of the busiest times of the year. We can’t argue that. Between planning family gatherings, attending events, and finding the perfect gifts, this time of year can be overwhelming. But you will want to dedicate a lot of time to your new puppy.

Puppies need attention, supervision, and consistent training, especially in the first few weeks. Ensuring you and your family are able to invest time into your new puppy is essential. This way, you can focus on bonding and teaching them the basics.

Puppy Proofing

Puppies are curious and will try getting into things. While your home may look sweet and festive to you, the decor can look like a new set of chew toys and playful obstacles for your puppy. They’re naturally inquisitive, so items such as ornaments, tinsel, ribbons, and lights can pose risks if they’re within reach.

Try keeping the fragile stuff higher up, and use pet-friendly materials when you can. Also, make sure power cords are out of reach. A little holiday safety planning goes a long way in keeping your puppy safe and your decorations intact.

Family Introductions

This should be obvious considering how family-focused holidays are. When you get a puppy, it's important to introduce them to everyone in your family.

But be careful, make sure to do this slowly, especially with younger children who may be excited to see the puppy. Also, set some ground rules for guests, like avoiding constant sudden movements and giving the puppy space.

Alongside introductions, try to give your puppy a space that they can relax in when they feel overwhelmed with too much stimulation. Having a quiet area where your puppy can retreat to can help them feel secure. A “safe zone,” such as a small cozy bed or an out-of-the-way room, can be a place for your puppy to go.

Holidays are a time for family, and introducing your new puppy to everyone can be a special moment. Make introductions slowly, especially for younger children who may be excited but need guidance on handling a small puppy.

Setting some ground rules for children and guests, like avoiding sudden movements and giving the puppy plenty of space, can help create a positive experience for everyone. After all, you want your puppy’s first holiday memories to be filled with love and comfort.

Plan for Travel with Your Puppy

Whether we know it or not, some of our puppies don’t like to travel. However, some families have to bring their pets along (for safety reasons) to family gatherings. In fact, about 37% of dog owners in the U.S. claim to bring their furry friends to holiday celebrations.

If you’re planning to do the same, make sure you’re prepared with essentials like a pet carrier, food, water, toys, and blankets.

Also, check ahead with any family members to make sure they’re also comfortable. There’s no more of an awkward feeling like showing up to the front door with no food and an unwanted guest.

Takeaways

The holidays are an exciting time for everyone. When you’re introducing a new puppy into your life, it can be even more exciting. With some thoughtful planning and a commitment to making your puppy feel safe, loved, and comfortable, this year could make for the beginning of new traditions.

After all, there’s no gift like the love of a puppy – especially in a time filled with it already!
